What do self-love and unicorns have in common?

Let’s be real. What the hell does ‘self-love’ even mean?!!? As we rush head long into the holiday season everyone is going to be shouting self-love and self-care from the rooftops and trying to get you to buy #AllTheThings so you can self-care yourself into a wild self-loving frenzy.

 

For those of you out there who have spent most of your life hating yourself and/or talking shit to yourself, practicing “self-love” can sound really fucking annoying... especially if the space in between loving yourself and hating yourself is pretty vast. For many, it’s a really big leap... and that’s ok.

WE GOT YOU!

Don’t get us wrong, at the end of the day, we want you to be madly in-love with yourself, but we also know that this relationship takes time. We don’t want you to miss the point because the expectation feels unattainable. We also don't want you to buy into the myth that you need to buy a bunch of crap to get in on the self-love train. So let's break it down...

 

In a nutshell, all self-love really means is you choose yourself and you hold yourself in high regard... regularly. There's no ONE way or RIGHT way to do this. It's a practice. It's not a requirement be 100% self-love all the time, we all fall short here and there (we're humans), the goal is to keep returning to the practice of loving your self, returning to you.

Before you start trying to employ new self-care/love practices, start noticing and acknowledging the ways you already practice self-love!

For instance you:

  • breathe
  • cook for yourself
  • read to yourself
  • educate yourself
  • pleasure yourself
  • take walks
  • give yourself second chances
  • put yourself in fun experiences
  • give yourself a solid night’s rest
  • exercise
  • speak up when it’s uncomfortable
  • ask for help when shit is hard
  • spend time building your company
  • allow yourself to cry or breakdown
  • set boundaries (even the smallest ones count)
  • open and read our loving and helpful emails!

When it comes to bringing in new practices and expanding your self-love... Start SMALL.

Don’t get caught up in the story of what it means to be ‘self-loving’ because that’s a waste of valuable mental real-estate, simply look for the ways you already are AND build on that. You can add a new behavior each week and then strive towards making it a habit. Just keep going. Don’t worry about what it looks like or what it’s supposed to look like, or if you are making the mark. Commit to being more cognizant of all the ways you already show up for yourself - big and small, and allow them to be opportunities to affirm your current accomplishments, as well as shift your mindset from who you think you are to who you are aiming to become. Writing in your journal daily 1-3 ways you've shown up for you can be a great way to begin to flex and build the self-love muscle.
