3 Questions To Ask Yourself To Rewrite Old Labels
Sep 01, 2022In Life Camp this week, Ruby and I were discussing on one of our group coaching calls with our campers the many labels and titles we carry around and associate ourselves with. Think about it.
When is the last time you referred to yourself as:
- Scattered
- Lazy
- Disorganized
- Crazy
- Loud
- Intense
- Anxious
- High-strung
- Rigid
We’re guessing it was recent… maybe even today. Here’s the real kicker… even though we might think of ourselves as a self-proclaimed anxious Virgo, or super emo Cancer (or insert your label here) we really can't take the credit... usually we didn’t come up with these labels ourselves, we adopted them.
Labels and titles are generally developed from projections put onto us from other people. Maybe it was parents, a 3rd grade teacher, an aspect of our culture, religion, an ex, the patriarchy… you get our point, the list could go on and on.
When we start to internalize these criticisms, viewpoints and judgements etc. they begin to play a crucial, often fixed and insidious role in the way in which we perceive ourselves. This is how we become the self-proclaimed ____ (negative label)!
As we begin to identify with these titles more and more over time, we not only start to believe them but we also reinforce them which eventually leads to developing a personality trait. The reality is, if we trace it back to the origin of the title, it was simply a shitty belief/label/opinion someone else put on us.
At some point in time we subconsciously co-signed and started to believe it… Fortunately! You can recover from that! Remember the mantra we shared in this blog post…
Change is possible, personality isn’t permanent and the past doesn’t get to define you.
If you’ve been stuck with labels or titles you don’t love, have outgrown or are just plain tired of living out, it’s time to ask yourself some questions:
In your current life, what titles or narratives do you carry around to describe yourself?
Do they serve you?
When you stop and think about it, does that label really reflect you? Or is it just a thought you’ve habituated over time?
